WHY GROUP THERAPY?
Group therapy can be valuable for several reasons, and its effectiveness can vary depending on the individuals involved, the specific goals of the therapy, and the skills of the therapist leading the group. Here are my 5 main reasons why I consider Betrayal Trauma group therapy as valuable:
1. Social Support: The shame of betrayal can make you feel isolated and alone, fueling negative self-talk like blaming yourself for your partner’s actions, whether involving pornography, online sex, or infidelity. Group therapy offers a supportive community where you can connect with others facing similar challenges. Hearing their experiences reduces feelings of shame and isolation, normalizes your struggles, and fosters a sense of belonging. This shared journey creates a positive, motivating atmosphere that encourages personal growth.
2. Diversity of Perspectives: Groups typically consist of individuals with diverse backgrounds and experiences. This diversity can bring a range of perspectives to discussions, offering new insights and solutions that you may not have considered so allows you to observe and learn from the experiences of others. It provides an opportunity to practice and improve interpersonal skills, such as communication, empathy, and conflict resolution, within a safe and supportive environment. Observing positive changes in others can serve as a powerful motivator for you. Witnessing the progress of peers can inspire hope and belief in the possibility of change.
3. Feedback and Validation: Members of the group offer feedback, validation, and constructive criticism which can be particularly helpful if you are struggling with distorted thinking patterns residual of the gas-lighting and minimising of the betrayer’s behviour. The feedback offered by the other members of the group will help you to see alternative perspectives.
4. Skill Building: Group therapy can provide a structured environment for learning and practicing coping skills which will help you to learn new ways to manage stress, anxiety, or other challenges and receive feedback from both the therapist and other participants.
5. Cost-Effective: Group therapy is often more cost-effective than individual therapy because it allows for working multiple clients simultaneously, making mental health support more accessible to a larger number of people.
